A huge thank you to those who came to our Knit a Long at November’s Feast – it was freezing but the rain stayed away until the last minutes of the market – hoorah!

Even the Feast Volunteers join in with the Knitting

So many squares… Knitting West Norwood Together with The Stitch & WN Feast Knital

Some of the ‘Stitchees’ show great determination (or just plain nuts!) as they sat in the cold knitting up a storm… maybe they should have sat in the box of blanket squares????

Knitting West Norwood Together with The Stitch & WN Feast Knital

seriously hardcore… knitting from midday until the very end – I gave up after less than an hour as my hands were too cold 😉

November Feast is coming!

This months WN Feast will have even more on that usual – you can join in with making mosaics, knitting, taking photos and building a clay map of West Norwood as well as the full array of fantastic handmade dishes and cakes… beer, coffee and handmade goodies all around the Feast Market.

The ‘Stitchees’ have been busy… we have so many squares of knitting to go towards the (possibly giant) blanket for the raffle for the  South London Refugee Association.

Actually rather excited to see how big this will get… and how warm to snuggle up to 🙂

The Stitch got a new sewing machine from Lidl and it’s rather fab!

Carla did a test run and was impressed.

Teresa & Charlotte (of FEAST) have asked if we would join in with the FEAST knitting project and, of course we said yes!

The project is for WNW to knit enough CD sized square to make a quilt which will then be raffled off to raise money for South London Refugee Association.

Charlotte has already started this at FEAST and it was huge success, especially at Tea & Talk!

We had several beginners and some who haven’t knitted in many years, as well as a few seasoned experts who knitted 10 squares to other people’s starting line!

Most people managed a whole square at the end of the Stitch session but a freshly baked cake was up for offer for those who did 🙂

We envisage a huge blanket!!!

November’s FEAST is themed around ‘hands-on art’ and there will be a huge Knit Off too! So put the 6th November in your diary.

Zippers… easy peasy ‘ish

After a months break in August we are back doing the Stitch at L’Arche… that does mean that another entire month has passed without an updated blog post – oops. The Facebook page does get updated more often.

Last Saturday’s session was making little triangle pyramid pouches in our quest for zipper mastery!

Stitch - Triangle Pouches & more

Some people who are more advanced than others, did some quilting on their pouches – show offs!

There was some unpicking done but all in the name of perfection (I think everyone kept forgetting the little tab on the side of the pouch)!

Stitch - Triangle Pouches & more

Tara had to be a little different, had to create hers with the zipper facing the other way to everyone else.

Stitch - Triangle Pouches & more

We think it would make a great little tent for a mini teddybear 🙂

Group shot of our Triangle pouches

I think we all passed with flying colours

BUT….

This weekend we continued with the Zipper mastery by making some more pouches… some people are making a large boxy pouch, others a boxy bottomed pouch and a few others are continuing with triangle pouches of different sizes… no photos of these just yet – they will be coming next week after we finish them… who knew that outer fabric, inner lining, interfacing and wadding, coupled with a zip would cause such issues 😉

Here’s the pattern and tutorial we used so that you can reach zipper nirvana with us.

The Crafty Gemini also made a video to follow if you prefer that method and she also mentions how the size can make a taller shape  https://youtu.be/cXZ6BTEnPE4

PS: We had a good root through our stash of donated fabrics, tools and bits that we have required from lovely generous people and it only took several sandwiches (yum… thank’s Tara!) and several bags of recycling to sort it all.

Stitch - Triangle Pouches & more

This is just a few of the boxes of fabrics, now sorted into small, medium and large pieces. The yarn is all in one bag now and we discovered a few things that had us scratching our heads… plus a bag of Tara’s clothing that she had lost 6 months previously 😀

See you next week for the continuation of ‘fighting with zippers’

Sensory Blankets, Japanese Knot Bags & Summer breaks

Sensory Blankets continued…

We ended up with so many blankets – it was a great fun project that was quite ‘freeing’ in that you can pick out buttons, zips and toys… even old CD/DVD’s and any odd bits of fabric that you have no idea what to do with but has a great texture to touch and explore.

Each blanket was backed with fleece fabric and they are rather warm to have on your lap – we couldn’t help but touch all the different textures and items that have been added to each of them.

Japanese Knot Bags

We also made some project bags – they make great gift bags too, the Japanese Knot Bag is great for holding your stitch session work 🙂

You can find the free sewing pattern on Helen Heath website http://www.helenheath.com/sewing-patterns

I can’t find the flat project bag pattern we used for the stitch session but this is very similar and it doesn’t have darts to create the curved bottom so it’s a lot easier 🙂

http://www.thechillydog.com/2015/07/sewing-pattern-japanese-knot-bag.html

The strap and top of the bag can be folded over so you have a little fabric bucket to pull out pins, threads etc when needed – then close it up and it’s ready for your next making session 🙂

Summer Break for The Stitch!?

There will be some breaks coming up for The Stitch group due to people being away for holidays and work commitments so some of the sessions have been cancelled.

It’s thought that August may have be a summer break for the group and this weekend – the 23rd July could be the last session for awhile.

Here’s are Google Calendar https://thestitch.co.uk/join-us/ and sign up page or use the link below if you just want to jump to the form.

You can opt to have an email sent which we try to send each week saying what that weeks theme is or any other news – Email Notification

Hope everyone is enjoying the heat wave rather than turning bright (painful) red like me 😉

Feasting with Friends

The Stitch at West Norwood Feast

The Stitch at West Norwood Feast June 2016

We had great fun and got lots of donations which will go towards fixing the sewing machines, keeping the group in sewing bits and bobs so we can continue to teach either other new skills 🙂

The Stitch at West Norwood Feast June 2016

Such a hot sunny day – and maybe we should start doing ice cold drinks as they were very popular!

We do have some some goodies left so please let us know if you are interested in helping the community group with keeping it awesome and open to all!

Just a small selection shown below – we have a basket in the L’Arche / Rock Paper Scissors Shop that you can make a donation towards.

We also got to chat to Bex from the Library of Things who were right next to our table.

They might be able to help with a new space for us while L’Arche are refitting out the workshops (they close down for a few months!) so it would be fantastic to be with other Open Works start ups 🙂

Library of Things at West Norwood Feast June 2016

West Norwood has so many community groups that all link together giving scope to new projects, opportunities and a great way to help people get away from isolation and stress – the word ‘community’ has been lost in some places but it’s very much alive in West Norwood!

Great music by Los Domingos which got everyone dancing!

We hope to see you at the next Stitch session 11-2pm and we will be working on the fidget blankets again – but as always you can bring a project with you or just come to ask questions or learn something new 🙂

Sunglasses/glasses slipcases, fabric basket bins, reversible shopping bags, notebook and notebook covers – lots of other items have been made by the Stitchees at home too so expect to see some lovely cushions, quilts and more!

More preparations for this Sunday’s Feast on Saturday’s session but feel free to drink coffee, snack on biscuits whilst getting on with your own project or learn something new.

We hope to see you soon.

🙂

Sensory Blanket WIP…

Fab work from our Stitchees on the sensory blanket suggested by Janet from Spiral Arts who works with people with Dementia.

We all loved the pocket versions with cute cats. Some of the squares have zips, shoe laces, furry bits and, there’s even a scrubbing sponge which looks cool and the texture is rather interesting.

So many more squares for the Sensory Blanket… actually I think we will have several blankets at this rate!

More to come 🙂

Sensory Blankets & Experiments

We started the sensory blanket – also known as the fidget blanket.

Janet from the Rock Paper Scissors London group works as an Art Practitioner (Spiral Arts), and runs workshops for people with Alzheimer’s and  Dementia related conditions.

It’s a great way to experiment with different textures and have fun with colours too

Creating this blanket is great fun for us and we hope the recipients will enjoy it too.

We will be continuing with this project (Janet wont be there as she is away but is back the following Saturday) and the Jean Bag project, plus you can always bring your own as always or just pop along to learn something new!

See you soon 🙂
