Sensory Blanket WIP…

Fab work from our Stitchees on the sensory blanket suggested by Janet from Spiral Arts who works with people with Dementia.

We all loved the pocket versions with cute cats. Some of the squares have zips, shoe laces, furry bits and, there’s even a scrubbing sponge which looks cool and the texture is rather interesting.

So many more squares for the Sensory Blanket… actually I think we will have several blankets at this rate!

More to come 🙂

Sensory Blankets & Experiments

We started the sensory blanket – also known as the fidget blanket.

Janet from the Rock Paper Scissors London group works as an Art Practitioner (Spiral Arts), and runs workshops for people with Alzheimer’s and  Dementia related conditions.

It’s a great way to experiment with different textures and have fun with colours too

Creating this blanket is great fun for us and we hope the recipients will enjoy it too.

We will be continuing with this project (Janet wont be there as she is away but is back the following Saturday) and the Jean Bag project, plus you can always bring your own as always or just pop along to learn something new!

See you soon 🙂

Upcycling Jeans into a Bag - tutorial from Elna.com

Saturday’s Session & Library of Things

If you signed up to our email you would have heard about this Saturday’s project – you can have a go at turning your old unusable jeans into a bag!  Cool project.  Thanks for the fab idea Sade!  Carla will be on hand for support.

What you will need:

  • One old pair of jeans (size unimportant)
  • An old belt
  • 50cm x 110/140cm of printed heavy cotton fabric (or similar – we have some that should suit)
  • See link to instructions here: Denim bag from Elna.com (including photo above)

You can of course, bring your own project and/or questions about anything stitchery (is that a word?)

Another Project that could be interesting is from one of the members of Rock Paper Scissors (the shop next door), asked if we could help with a project for people with Alzheimer’s/dementia.  She works in a home and wants to create a “fidget blanket” (I had to google it too)  e.g. with heat and hands website

Please bring some ideas along.  We would like to make a start next Saturday 🙂

The Library of Things has a new home!

Library of Things logo

They can officially announce they are moving back to where it all began – in West Norwood!

This project was all part of The Open Works – a Lambeth council year long project that helped the community start their own projects, which is how The Stitch started so we love to keep up to date with our fellow groups!

We’re moving in with a social supermarket called Community Shop. It’s just behind West Norwood cemetery, next to Park Hall Business Centre and the recycling centre.Library of Things new space

You can read up on the project here – Their website can be found at libraryofthings.co.uk

Follow them on Facebook and Twitter

We hope to see you tomorrow 🙂

Fab collection of fabric storage baskets.

Happy New Year… er…

Yes, it’s April but the last message on this blog was Merry Christmas and we thought it was appropriate to wish you a Happy New Year… well, we do wish you a Happy New Year regardless of the month anyway 🙂

A very mini update…

We had a log cabin quilting session and one of our Stitchees, Gabrielle took to it in gusto – mini quilt and cushion! Fab work 🙂

Our last session was hosted by Sue who helped us all make fabric baskets

The pattern we used was from the Todays Quilter magazine but if you don’t have that copy then you can visit Birch Fabrics website for a free tutorial and pattern to have a go yourself – one you’ve done one then you will want to make more – I recommend starting with the smallest size as my first attempt was with huge and it ended up in the bin (oh, the waste of material!!)

In the press again!

Have you seen the latest 24/7 magazine?

The magazine gives local news for West Norwood and is an independent magazine run solely by Hilary Bryan – follow her at @westnorwood247 on twitter.

We will try to post more often rather than every few months but if you do have any ideas or tutorials, useful info for the group and you would like it to appear on this website then please contact us to let us know – you can also follow us on Facebook and Twitter (which is updated more often!)

Merry Christmas & Happy New Year

We had our last (of the year) Stitch session and we will be back on the 9th January

Merry Christmas

The little paper Christmas trees were made by the Stitchees for table decorations so a little ‘card’ was made 🙂

These were really popular at the fundraising stall at West Norwood Feast

Here’s a photo step-by-step tutorial on how to make your own. Bead and Cord

I like the cute yarn hat (on the red Christmas Tree in the first image).

Here’s a video tutorial by Handimania and if you don’t like videos then here’s the walk through with pictures. Handimania – Little yarn hats

If I had the patience I would try this one… lovely! Cargo Collective

A wonderful quilt created in response to the Paris attacks

Jackie, one of our very talented stitchees in her own words…RunnyCustard The Stitch 191215 WEB 001

It was just something I instantly wanted to do as soon as she I saw the image drawn by Jean Jullien – a French artist who lives in London, who has a website where he explains about the CND/Paris logo.  He posted it on social media and it went viral with others all over the world personalising it.

I saw it on the TV news and it just “spoke” to me, so to speak, so I felt I had to do something with it.

The quilt is composed of 130 squares to represent the 130 people who died.  There are 45 red and blue and 40 white squares.  It didn’t take long to make once I had decided how to – without thinking time probably about 24 hours in all.

The back of this wonderful textile wallhanging features hearts and the stitching of the symbol comes through.

We hope you have a wonderful Christmas and a Happy New Year

We hope to see you on the 9th January 😀

We are in the Guardian!

Some really cool news! We feature in an article about West Norwood in the Guardian (online). It’s a beautiful piece & I’m chuffed to bits.

Since it’s release yesterday, we’ve had 3 more new joiners too!  I’m beaming from ear to ear!

Pompoms & Reindeers…

Pompom noses for Reindeer – cute right!?

We will be making these to sell at the December 6th Feast as a fundraiser for the Stitch community group.

RunnyCustard Stitch Pom Poms 2015 010

They will come flat-packed and kids should have some fun putting them together and you can keep the pom pom all year round!

You can paint them, pour glitter on them – decorate to your hearts content!

Some pics of pompom making we did last Saturday – we will be making more, we did run out of red so there are some glittery pink and orange noses 😉

Pompom Fail!

I swear this looked like a lovely little multi coloured pompom and it was being fluffed up and suddenly it collapsed – we have no idea why… oh dear… here it is in all it’s err… glory next to some more successful pompoms.

Here’s the pattern for the dog blanket – they prefer knitted but still accept crochet – crochet stitches apparently catch in animals claws… dog blanket pattern which was made by WhoDunnKnit

They have a PDF pattern for cat toy mice!

ps: don’t forget about L’Arche & Rock Paper Scissors Christmas Fayre this Sunday (22nd Nov) on Idmiston Road – lovely gardens with mince pies, mulled wine, hot dogs, face painting, xmas decoration workshop, live music and lots of handmade goodies which make great gifts.

we will remind you of the L’Arche Candle Making workshop nearer the time – it’s on the 12th December so add it to your calendar – it was very popular last time!

Candle Making at L’Arche – another session soon!

Fab Candles at L’Arche Craft Workshop

The Candle making workshop at L’Arche in West Norwood was a great success – lots of people came and another workshop is being planned!

Some people asked if it was every weekend!

Here are some photos of the day – lots of lovely candles and a few ice candles were made too (the round ones with ‘holes’ in them which are beautiful) – the workshop was suppose to last a couple of hours but it went on all day – some people had to go back in order to finish the candles.

Another workshop will happen possibly the last week of November but we will post up information soon. (see below for L’Arche social media links and for Rock Paper Scissors & The Stitch who will be posting when it will be)

Szilvia makes a candle…

… and makes her mother proud 😀

Szilvia of ‘Fitness with Szilvia‘ and ‘Szilvia’s Pets‘ making her candle – a lot of people put colours in the wrong way around – the candle is made upside down – Szilvia’s colour scheme is based on a flame which is appropriate! – click the links to visit her facebook pages. (She has yet to decide on the name of her fitness business so the page is currently ‘Szilvia’s Fitness’ – I personally like the first version 😉
